How to Keep Romance Alive During Parenthood
Having a child can be one of the most profound changes in a relationship - yet I've discovered that it utterly alters how romance fits into our daily lives. Before kids, really connecting might happen quite naturally indeed. We'd have impromptu dinners, very quiet mornings, weekend breaks, long chats, and nights where neither of us would have to consider schoolwork, meal times, childcare duties - or even wonder if our little ones were finally asleep at last. Parenting really does change that cadence though. Instantly, a huge portion of my focus goes towards another little human relying totally on me. Then there's work, our home responsibilities, lack of rest, financial stressors, and all the mental effort involved in running our family life - so romance can gradually shift from something rather automatic to something I consistently vow to fit in later on.
I don't think maintaining romance during parenthood calls for us to recreate every detail of what the relationship was like pre-kids. Our life has changed quite a bit now, and I truly believe romance should adapt right along with it. A romantic partnership during parenthood may involve far fewer impromptu weekend getaways - yet more significant talks once our young ones are tucked away in bed. It could mean holding hands during a family stroll, cooking up our special dish, jotting down a sweet note, or really making an effort to secure a full hour alone when life just feels extremely hectic. To me, the aim isn't escaping parenting altogether to relive the romance. It's finding all sorts of creative ways to preserve affection, desire, friendship, and deep emotional closeness right within the midst of the family life we've lovingly built together.
